Arrived in Corromandel, New Zealand, about 1852 as a blacksmith.
He may have been a sailor, he was sometimes referred to as the captain. He was later a carpenter, provincial electoral roll lists him: 1855 - Auckland, carpenter, householder 1856 and 1857 - West Queen st, joiner 1863 to 1875 - Chapel st
There is also reference to him as a witness to his sister-in-law's marriage (Millis/Vincent) on August 9th 1858 at St Patrick's Cathederal, Auckland.
JOHN AUGUSTUS SAKEY and ELLEN (MILLIS) SAKEY Died: 8.2.1881 Died: 7.3.1921 Both buried at Symonds Street Cemetery: John: Certificate number 16 Ellen: Certificate number 55.
When the Auckland City Motorway System was being constructed, this cemetery was partially in the way. So the graves were removed. Two public memorials were constructed commemorating those whose graves were remmoved. But John's and Ellen's names are not on either memorial.

Twin brother of Helen, was a stonemason. Married a widow, Sarah Anne Howie, who had a family. He seems to have died or left her soon afterwards as their only son grew up known as a Howie until he came to marry. 5

Married Steve Wright of Avondale. The family moved to Australia soon after Horace was born. All the other children were born in Sydney. The family then returned to New Zealand in 1910, however Horace remained in Australia, having married in 1907 5
General Notes: Child - Matilda Jane Sakey
Birth cert no. 107 / 1867 Auckland register, nothing else known in NZ. Appeared in Sydney 1886 where she gave birth to William James, (father not known) and she married Edward Coote two years later. There was one son from this marriage, Edward H. T. Coote born in Sydney 1888 (cert no. 88 03217) but it seems that her husband died shortly after (death cert 88 01094). Matilda remained in Sydney and married Frederick Smith in 1890, her address at that time was Belmore Lane Surry Hills. There were 6 more children from this marriage and they lived at 50 Campbell St Newtown, it is probable that William and Edward lived there with them because they are shown as sibblings on the youngest child's birth cert. Matilda died of Pernicious Anaemia in 1914 (death cert #15097) her address at that time was 27 Hordern Street Newtown. She is burried in grave #9360 C of E section "T" at Rookwood, her husband Frederick died 12 years later and is burried in the same grave. There is a headstone in good condition 5
General Notes: Child - Emma Selina Sakey
Never married. She nursed at Oakley psychiatric hospital. In 1891 was living at Abbot's Way, Auckland. Later retired to live at Onera, Waiheke Island. 5
