3. He worked as a Farmer between 1909 and 1918 in Tatarariki, Northern Wairoa, Northland, New Zealand. 7 In 1909 the family shifted from Te Kopuru to Tatararaki and leased the farm belonging to Mary Catherine's eldest brother, Robert, who had recently died and whose family subsequently shifted to Auckland. Mary, John and family continued to run the farm while John was still at the timber mills, their aim being to save enough money to buy their own farm.
There was a well at the Tatarariki homestead that proved useful in dry weather, and kerosene lanterns and candles lighted the house. A pony and trap were used when the family needed to collect mail or groceries from Te Kopuru. A small school was situated across the road from the farm and the schoolmaster usually boarded with the Gibbins family. The cows were milked by milking machines run from a large generator, the milk separated, skim being fed to pigs and the cream churned in a large hand-powered butter churn for sale to the local storekeeper.
4. He worked as a Dairy farmer in 1919 in Tikinui, Northern Wairoa, Northland, , , NZL. In 1919, Mary and John Gibbins decided to buy a farm at Tikinui. Mary trained as a teacher and taught at Rapu, while Ruby and Rhoda worked for a time at the boarding house owned by the Montgomery family at Arapohue.
While farming at Tikinui, the Gibbins family sold the gum-digging rights on the farm to a Dalmatian family named Erceg, who dug out the gum and then restored the paddocks for farm use.5. Living: 1926, Tikinui, Northern Wairoa, Northland, , , NZL. 8

General Notes: Husband - John "Jack" Gibbins
John always attributed his erect bearing to the fact that as a child, he used to march with the army band to carry the music (his father was the army bandmaster).
It is thought that he moved from Auckland to the Northern Wairoa to start a new life after three of his brothers died.
Death Notes: Wife - Mary Catherine Vincent
She died of bowel cancer after a six-month illness while on the operating table at Auckland Hospital.
Burial Notes: Wife - Mary Catherine Vincent
Her headstone reads: In loving memory of MARY CATHERINE dearly beloved wife of JOHN GIBBINS who died June 27th, 1925 aged 51 years. Thy will be done.
General Notes: Wife - Mary Catherine Vincent
Mary was the sixth child of Robert and Fanny Vincent and was born at Shortland near Thames, where her father built and owned the Wharf Hotel, and later farmed at Manaia. When Mary was a young woman her family moved to a farm at Mititai, and she lived in the Northern Wairoa area the remainder of her Life. Mary Catherine is listed among the women entitled to vote in the first election open to women in 1893. She is recorded in the electoral roll as: Vincent, Mary Catherine, residence - Mititai; electorate - Hobson; occupation - Housekeeper; roll number 3327.
Medical Notes: Wife - Mary Catherine Vincent
In 1923 tragedy struck the Gibbins family Mary Catherine had been unwell for a year or so, and had traveled down to Auckland Hospital for an operation, She collapsed in the operating theatre and died. A year after her death the family farm was sold and the family separated.
Notes: Marriage
The marriage was at Mary Catherine's eldest brother's farm.
The Northern Wairoa River dominated the lives of the Gibbins family in many ways. They had a launch named 'The Swallow' that was used for fishing, to take cans of cream over to the dairy factory, and also to ferry the family across the river.
When there was a dance on in the area the young family members put on their best clothes, being careful to carry the dancing shoes and to hitch clothing up clear of any river in mud. Then gumboots were donned, and they clambered in to the launch for the river crossing. Stan often acted as M.C. at these functions. After the dance it was back into gumboots again for the return river crossing. Dodging mud being part of the fun.
Music was also important, with the home having a gramophone and piano. Alice taught Bob a few simple tunes on the piano when he was very young, which must have kindled his interest in music, for it was a lifetime interest for him in later life. Rhoda also plays the piano well.
Burial Notes: Child - Thomas Stanley (Stan) Gibbins

General Notes: Child - Thomas Stanley (Stan) Gibbins

Stan saw service in the WW1, being fortunately spared from injury or death.
After the war he worked as a driver in Northland before moving to Auckland and marrying Ivy.
General Notes: Child - Ruby Eveline Gibbins
Ruby worked for a time at the boarding house owned by the Montgomery family (cousins) at Arapohue.
Birth Notes: Child - Rhoda Emily Gibbins
Worked in the boarding house in Arapohue owned by the Montgomery's (cousins)
General Notes: Child - Rhoda Emily Gibbins
Rhoda married Jack Clune and they farmed in the Dargaville area.
General Notes: Child - Alice May Gibbins
Alice grew up helping on the farm. When her mother died she went to Auckland to work
Auckland City was only visited twice by Alice Gibbins when she was a child, as transport was very different then. In 1912, when Alice was 7 years old, she had her first big trip. The Gibbins family traveled overnight on a steamer down the Northern Wairoa River and across the Kaipara Harbour to land at Helensville. Then they bearded a train for Auckland where the travelers were made most welcome at the home of Mary's eldest sister, Sarah, her husband John Davis and their family. Next day they journeyed on again by boat and finally reached their holiday destination at the home of John's sister, Sarah and her husband Fred Busch, where the family were farming at Pt. Fitzroy on Great Barrier Island. Alice still remembers the wonderful fishing, and how the cases of fresh fruit they took to the island were really appreciated.
The second trip to Auckland that Alice remembers came about when a young Schoolteacher named Ray Fletcher was boarding at the Gibbins household. He was a very popular member of the family and each school holiday Ray took a few of his pupils to stay with his parents in Auckland and see the sights. Ray took Alice and Mary to the zoo (then situated in Onehunga), to a concert at the Town Hall and many other sights. Ray Fletcher was sadly missed when the Great War claimed his life a few years later.
Death Notes: Child - Edna Laura Gibbins
There was a Maori Pa situated near the family farm and a bad outbreak of typhoid occurred. Mary Fanny contracted the disease and was very sick for a time, but recovered. Edna, the youngest family member, was not so fortunate as she contracted typhoid and died.
General Notes: Child - Edna Laura Gibbins
Contracted Typhoid from an outbreak at the Maori Pa next to the farm
General Notes: Child - Robert Llewellyn Gibbins
Robert was born on his VINCENT grandparent's farm, then lived his early life at his parent's farm at Tikinui. When his mother died he was only eleven, and the youngest by seven years, so he was brought up by his sister Rhoda and her husband.
