My GIBBINS, BALLARD and other Ancestors’ Family History
Recent updates have included:
1.
The wife of
George Hotterway and her parents.
My sister Helen discovered that George’s wife Jane was Jane Eltham
and has researched further into the Eltham family.
2.
A lot of new information on and the Maude
ancestors.
This was triggered by a chance discovery in Burke's History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland of reference
to the Marriage of Thomas
Stamp and Mary Maude. The result of this find was a huge amount of
information on Maude
family ancestors back to the 11th century (see below).
It also provided links into British and other European royal ancestors from
King Edward III
of England.
Unfortunately there is some doubt about one key link (see below).
3. Some additional information on our Stamp ancestors.
4. Correction of some information on Robert Ballard and Susanna Morris and their parents.
I hope this information is of interest or benefit to you in your research.
Please let me know if there are some mistakes in this
material, or you have additional information you think might be relevant.
If anyone has any photos of my Ballard ancestors they would like to share, I
would appreciate it.

Many hours of work have been put into the research and
documentation of these ancestors. I hope you will find the information I
present here to be of interest.
Some of the information presented results from the research
of a number of (both close and distant) family members. Some of their work
helped give me a head start on accumulating this information.
In particular my sister Helen has done an enormous amount of
research and viewed many, many microfilms. Her contribution to the information
on these pages has been invaluable.
Please contact me if you wish to learn more about this
information. I could have more than is presented.
NB: The time I have available to devote to family history research varies. Sometimes it is months before I am able to devote sufficient time to this hobby to update what I have. This sometimes means that responses to queries might not always be quick.
This document records my probable (but not proven) Maude ancestors from the time of William the Conqueror. The descendants of Eustace the Norman evolved into the Maude family and this document records the line to my potential ancestor, Christopher Maude (#52, 17th generation)
Some of the information here is disputed so please do not take it all as fact.
In particular, data on the following individuals is uncertain or contradictory:
· Aylmer de Montalt
· Simon de Monte Alto / Simon de Mohaut
· The descent from Thomas Monhault (d. c.1320) for 5 generations to Thomas Monhault (d. c.1490)
· The parent-child link between Christopher Maude and John Maude de Staynland (who was almost certainly my 11th great-grandfather). If this link can be proven then the earlier Maudes in this report, and the royal ancestors of Katherine Tempest, are reasonably certain.
Refer to the early Maude descendants document (pdf).
I have not yet included the genealogical links to the
English royal family in my core records.
If John
Maude de Staynland is not descended from Christopher
Maude, son of Thomas Maude and Katherine Tempest, and that one ancestral link
from him is wrong (and this may well be the case) the rest of the relationship
between me and these royals is irrelevant.
Thomas Maude is linked to these royals through the Tempest, Carre, Clifford, Percy, and Mortimor families into the Plantagenets. Refer to the ancestors of Katherine Tempest for this information.
From Edward III there are links to the royal houses of Europe.
Note: I have read that 80% of individuals of English descent
are probably descended from Edward III so my link to him is not unusual.
In my case he could be my 21st great-grandfather.
