south island skiing tour - 2 weeks - from christchurch
This itinerary is a general guide what you may want to do on a 2 week skiing tour of the South Island, assuming you fly into Christchurch International Airport (CHC). Times can easily be extended to make the trip longer.
DAY 1: Arrive at CHC, and pick up a rental car from airport (see Car Rental Links) Driving west for 1.5 hours or so along the West Coast Highway, will take you to Springfield. From there many ski-fields are just a few hours away.
DAY 2 - 7: Continue visiting the local ski fields, most of which are less than an hour away.
Mount Cheeseman - Club Ski field
Porter Heights - Closest ski field to Christchurch City
Broken River - Excellent Club ski field
Craigieburn Valley Ski Area - Club ski field with accommodation
DAY 7-8: Continue back through Christchurch and then south for 1 hour, along SH1, until you reach Ashburton. From there, head inland, along SH77, for 1.5 hours and you should arrive in Methven. This is where you will access one of New Zealand's most popular ski fields, Mount Hutt. Spend up to 2 days there.
DAY 9: From Methven, take SH77 back to Ashburton, and continue south for an hour along SH1. At Timaru, head inland along SH7, through Tekapo and Cromwell to Queenstown. This should take about 6 hours. Check into a motel in Queenstown.
DAY 10 - 14: For the next few days you can visit several of Queenstown's famous ski fields.
Coronet Peak - One of the country's leading ski fields.
The Remarkables - Another of the country's leading ski fields, situated on the Remarkables Range.
Cardrona Alpine Resort - Ski field near Wanaka with extensive snowboarding facilities.
Treble Cone - The country's largest ski field, by skiable area.
There are several tour groups that you could join also, which include transport and admission.
DAY 15: Return to Christchurch using the usual route; up SH7 for 6 hours, then back up SH1 to Christchurch.
OTHER SKI FIELDS: You can also add in several of these popular ski fields into your itinerary:
Amuri/Hanmer Springs - 1.5 hrs N of Christchurch
Temple Basin - 2 hrs E of Christchurch
Mount Lyford - 1.5 hrs N of Christchurch
Mount Dobson - 2.5 hrs E of Christchurch
