The Sustainable Living Centre at New Lynn -  Angel Macnevin

Congratulations to Angel who will be leaving the Sustainable Living Centre to have a baby in December! The new co-ordinators are Meg Liptrot and Therese Mangos!

The Sustainable Living Centre opened to the public in New Lynn in June 2004. The centre inhabits a former 1970s Council House which was renovated by the EcoMatters Environment Trust, to provide residents of Waitakere City as well as the wider community with information to gain knowledge of how to live sustainably in the urban environment.

Workshops and seminars are held twice weekly and are based around the theme of Sustainable Living – topic areas range from Eco-building and Green Architecture, Making your own Natural Shampoos and Skin Care Products, Co-housing, Harvesting Rainwater, Composting, Creating an Energy Efficient Home, Sustainable Building Materials and how to Source them, Electro-Magnetic Radiation, Native Plant Propagation, Earth Building to Worm Farming. These workshops aim to facilitate practical tools and skills that can be integrated by each participant in their own life.

The Sustainable Households Programme, developed by Rhys Taylor, is run at the Sustainable Living Centre - 8 sessions over 16 weeks.  The programme aims to inform people on key issues, encourage people to reduce the impact on the planet with particular approaches while also saving some money. It covers several topics on Sustainable Living such as Waste, Energy, Shopping, Gardening, Water, Transport etc. Participants take part in group work, trial products and have take home activities.

The last courses for this year are coming up this month and are all excellent opportunities to learn from the professionals at a very small cost (only $10).

The Sustainable Living Centre is open to the public Wednesday – Friday 10am-2pm and is also open some Saturdays. There are several examples and options on display of how to renovate and/or build with a more sustainable approach and with more sustainable practices, products and services. For example we have a rain water collection tank and barrel, natural fibre flooring, alternative paint, options for insulation, energy efficient white wear, eco-cleaning products, solar hot water heating system, 2nd hand furniture etc.

Visitors are encouraged to come and explore ideas that might suit their own individual needs, we are happy to do research on different queries or help to find the right person to speak to about any given matter pertaining to sustainability.

A garden design has been funded and approved at the centre. The design will be in the process of being developed and applied to the land in the next couple of months. The garden will demonstrate organic, permaculture principals and have areas on display to show what can be done with the different garden spaces available in the urban environment.

A Sustainable Living Library will be opening in March at the Centre for people to come and browse or research books, periodical and videos.

There is a meeting space available to community and environmental groups. The centre can be used as a point of contact and can be used as a space to run workshops. A small retail shop is being developed and will sell products that are on display at the Centre.
