MATERIALS:   (ANY 4 PLY WOOL)   Blue 1 oz, White 1 ozs.
1 pair No.10 (3.25mm) knitting needles

TENSION:    8 sts and 10 rows to 1 inches.
ABBREVIATIONS:   B = blue,   W = white,   st=stitch, p=purl, pw=purlwise, k=knit, sl=slip 1 st, tog=together.

(1) CANDY STRIPE SKIRT
Using B, cast on 54 sts and work 3 rows in garter st.
1st PATTERN ROW: (right side) With W (k1, keeping wool at back slip 1 pw) to end.
2nd ROW:  With W (sl 1 pw, p 1) to end.
3rd ROW:  With B (keeping wool at back sl 1 pw, k1) to end.
4th ROW:  With B (p1, sl 1 pw) to end.
These 4 rows form the pattern. Repeat them until work measures 3 inches from beginning, ending with 4th row.
NEXT ROW:  (K2 tog) to end.
NEXT ROW:  (P2 tog) to last st, p1.
Break off wool and thread through remaining sts.

(2) MOCK CABLE SKIRT
Using B, cast on 52 sts and work 3 rows in garter st.
1st Patt row: (right side). P 2, (wool to back, sl 1 pw, k2, psso the 2 k sts, p 2) to end. (42 sts).
2nd row: K 2 (p1. wrn, p1, k2) to end (52 sts).
3rd row: P2 (k3, p2) to end.
4th row: K2, (p3. k2) to end. These 4 rows form the patt. Repeat them 4 times more, then work 1st row.
Next row: K2 tog, (p2 tog. k2 tog.) to end.
Break off wool and thread through remaining sts.

(3) LACY SKIRT
using W, cast on 49 sts and work 3 rows in garter st.
1st Patt row: (right side). With B (k1, wl fwd, k1, k3 tog, k1, wl fwd, k1) to end.
2nd row: P in B.
3rd row: Using W, work as first row.
4th row: P in W. These 4 rows form the patt. Rep. them 3 times more.
Next row: With B, K2, (k3 tog, k4) to last 5 sts, k3 tog. k2.
Next row: With B, p2 tog, *p1, (p2 tog.) twice: rep from * to last 3 sts, p1, p2 tog. Break off wool and thread through rem. sts.

BONNET: Using B, cast on 12 sts and k 1 row. Work in garter st. dec 1 st. each end of next and foll alternate rows until 2 sts rem. K2 tog. Fasten off.

THE BODY:
Wind W, 30 times round a piece of cardboard 2 1/2 ins wide. Slip wool off cardboard and form head by tying firmly round all strands 3/4" from top. Secure all loops at other end. Make arms in one piece similarly, using cardboard 1 3/4 ins. wide. Form hands by tying about 1/4 inch from each end. Slip arms through centre of body.

TO MAKE UP: Join skirt seam. Insert lower end of body in top of skirt, draw up tightly and secure. Embroider eyes and nose on face and sew bonnet to back of head.
