GOODNIGHT, MR. MATTHEWS (I. Davies) ----------------------------------- I'm playing my cards on the table no secrets, no sense of direction its tough, baby, it's no party I said something I lost a connection ---------- Possibly relating to Mr. Matthews' sessions with a psychologist/psychiatrist. Laying everything out in the open to be examined. Getting to the bottom of his breakdown to hopefully begin the healing process. ---------- And it's all I can do to forget about you loving you is such a fascination 'cause I've loved you so long and my love is so strong but you know a certain party's missing ---------- This ties in with what Iva mentioned about part of Mr Matthews' breakdown was related to a woman. My gut feeling is that there might be something a little sinister in this 'relationship', which indicates that he could have been completely obsessed to the point of irrationality, or he was unable to control his obsession owing to some kind of mental instability. -------- I'll sit by the window now you sit anywhere that you want to sitting in the sunshine now we're hoping, as we're supposed to do -------- This is Mr Matthews' friend visiting him in hospital. Keeping him relaxed, though he's probably medicated up to the eyeballs and just needs peace and quiet. Keeping mental patients away from agitation and excitement which may trigger a relapse is part of the therapy. -------- If I get down on my knees would you forgive me, please its only that my heart is aching and it's all over you not a thing I can do little pieces of my world are falling, it's a good night -------- This is from Mr. Matthews' perspective again. The rational side of him realising what he has done and begging forgiveness from the person affected by his actions (presumably the woman) It could be that at this point Mr. Matthews is raving in the hospital, possibly saying things like "I'm sorry" to thin air which brings us to.... -------- "Goodnight, Mr. Matthews.. now, no talking .. the others are sleeping, there's always tomorrow ...." -------- Which I believe to be a nurse trying to settle Mr. Matthews down for the night. -------- .. better come back soon -------- Either a mild relapse to the unstable state of his mind which means that this is directed at the woman who left him (potentially threatening) or could be related to him wanting his sanity back. -------- 'Cause I love only you no other will do loving you is such a fascination -------- Hearkens back to his obsession with the woman -------- and I've told you before only you know the score but you know a certain part is missing -------- Possibly he has discussed things with this woman before his schitzophrenic breakdown so this line is related to something she knows about him - it could be she knows of his illness ("only you know the score") -------- if I go down on my knees would you forgive me, please it's only that my heart is breaking -------- Remorse for whatever it was that he did, possibly during one of his episodes or *the* episode which landed him in hospital. I am thinking he became violent when she refused his affections and flipped out entirely owing to some kind of mental instability. -------- but it's a very temporary thing it just happens all the time little pieces of my world are falling, it's a good night -------- The nature of some mental illnesses is that they affect the patient for a short time, but can occur frequently. In light of the above, I am wondering if the reference to a 'good night' here is relating to something which he did with this woman earlier (drugs/drink/full-contact game of scrabble?) that he is remembering which might have been the catalyst of his breakdown? Or maybe the 'good night' refers to the 'good days, bad days, nature of mental illness. Good days bring lucidity and peace, bad days are filled with anxiety and instability. The "good night" in this instance would refer to Mr Matthews having an evening of clarity when he can reflect on himself and why he is in hospital. --------
