A Catholic football team playing in the Christchurch Christian Soccer League Fitness and Training Links |

Introduction"The fitness of football players has always been brought into question as the tendency of players is to be lazy and just want to play a game" - Kenneth J. Sherry, author of Soccer Practice Plans for Effective Training "Idleness is the enemy of the soul." - St. Benedict, Rule of Benedict, No. 48 (6th century)
Vatican City Rovers is unabashedly a social team. In order to maintain a pretense of professionalism however, this page is presented as a resource to encourage players to improve their level of fitness and skill. Even if nobody actually makes use of the resources linked to from here, it is hoped that by reading through them and, in the most Catholic way possible, "meditating upon the mysteries" of the most strenuous regimes contained therein, the team can "imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise".In other words, perhaps some of the value therein will be mysteriously assimilated by VCR team members even if they never try them out, which is a reasonably likely scenario. Anyway, on with the links...
Soccer Fitness Tips (Jimmy Petruzzi's Online Soccer Academy)
Soccer Fitness Training (Kenneth J. Sherry, www.SoccerSoul.com)
- General Soccer Fitness
- Fitness Training for Goalkeepers ("The Goalkeeper is often an extrovert type character not afraid to order the players in front when they are not performing correctly...". Sounds like this is the page for you, Snip! Pity there's nothing there about how to make your goalie taller...)
- Fitness Training for Defenders (should "offer some protection to the Goalkeeper and the goal...". This is as opposed to our so-far traditional role of "protecting" the keeper by deflecting the ball away from her, and into the goal.)
- Fitness Training for Midfielders (The "engine room of the team...". Perhaps our engine room could do with a little more go-juice...)
- Fitness Training for Attackers ("the spearhead of the team...")
Enjoy!
