- Scenario Variant
This variant to the original scenario by Martin Soilleux-Cardwell adds more information regarding the names of French commanders, changes to the organization, training and morale of the light troops, and provides a new map. The original order of battle is otherwise unchanged. I have provided an order of battle for each side; I have attempted to arrange the information to conform with the revised Volley and Bayonet rules, Age of Frederick. Thanks to the contributors on the Yahoo! Groups Seven Years War discussion list, and particularly to Christian Rogge for information posted there. Other sources include Savory, Mollo, Orders of Battle from George Nafziger, and The BritishBattles.com web site. Any errors are my own, and interpretations are open to healthy discussion! General Notes: Light Troops - On the French side, the number of men under Fisher at Warburg is not clear: information from earlier dates indicates between 1,200 and 2,000 men in the unit, generally split evenly between mounted and foot. Lacking definitive information for this battle, I have taken the liberty to give the foot two strength points, which can be broken down into skirmishers, so as to give play interest in facing Bulow’s Legion Britanniques. I have rated the Legion as Morale 4, Poorly Trained, and Fisher’s foot as Morale 3, Militia. The Legion was recently organized, and while it was definitely superior to Fisher’s troops, was not equal to regular line troops. Fisher was apparently not a particularly zealous commander, and the performance of his troops was generally poor. If players prefer, they may agree to use the original order of battle for the light troops. The Map - the new map shows only one hill: the Hein Berg. The other slopes show the land sloping towards the Diemel; they do not appear to have affected the battle, and need not be displayed on the table top. Mark Sieber, June 2005 Order of Battle: Allied Army Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand, Erbprinz of Brunswick Right Wing Right Column, Generalleutnant von Hardenberg, Exhaustion = 8
General Freiherr von Spockern Left Wing Left Column, Generalleutnant Christian von Zastrow, Exhaustion = 8
British Cavalry Wing John Manners, Marquis of Granby, Corps Commander, Exhustion = 3
Detached Light Troops: Major von Bulow, Corps Commander, Exhaustion = 4
Turn 1 is 10:00 a.m. Last turn is 4:00 p.m. when the Allied Main Army arrives and follows through at which point the French pretty much are doomed, rather like the Austrians at Chotusitz. The Allies are the attackers. Granby arrives on the 12:00 noon turn. Bulow arrives on the 1:00 p.m. turn. The attack was professionally and flexibly handled and while normally I would only have Spockern as AC leading one column and the Erbprinz as CC for the other I think the skill with which the attack was made merits the addition of two extra DCs for flexibility.
