Scenario Notes: The battle starts at 8:00am and ends at the end of the 5:00pm turn (10 turns). The Prussians are the attackers. Blucher's Avant Garde, Gudin's division, Davout and the French corps troops are deployed at 7:00am some 400 yards apart between Hassenhausen and Spielberg. The French, forewarned by their scouts of the Prussian approach, may be stationary. Schmettau's division arrives around Poppel at 8:00am. Friant's division arrives near Punscherau at 8:30am (that is, it can make a half move only this turn). Prince of Orange's division arrives around Poppel at 9:00am. Wartensleben's division arrives SW of Poppel at 10:00am. Morand's division arrives near Punscherau at 10:00am. Kuhnheim's division arrives SW of Poppel at 11:00am.The Prussian player may begin dicing for the arrival of CC Kalkreuth and von Arnim's division from 11:00am, requiring a 1 at 11, a 1 or 2 at 12, and so on. These will arrive NW of Poppel. All French infantry are mounted on brigade stands and all formed Prussian infantry are on regiment stands. I rated only the Prussian Guards as shock. Rating the grenadiers as shock would encourage the Prussian player to throw them in which didn't seem right, he should be encouraged to try standing still and shooting. I rated the Prussian artillery as poorly trained. I just could not square up it's battlefield performance with a V&B rating of trained. All French commands have 60% exhaustion, all Prussians 40%. I decided early on that 60% was right for the French and tried 50% for the Prussians but this gave the following: Fr 1 Div Ex=11; Fr 2 Div Ex=9; Fr 3 Div Ex=10; Pr AG Div Ex=3; Pr 1 Div Ex=10; Pr 2 Div Ex=10; Pr 3 Div Ex=8; Pr Res 1 Div Ex=9; Pr Res 2 Div Ex=8. Now some of the reserves were not engaged until the very end of the day but I still thought this looked too tough for historical balance. The 40% can also represent the drop in Prussian resolve following the destruction of Prince Louis Ferdinand's force at Saalfeld a few days earlier. Even with the Prussians at 40% exhaustion it's a tough prospect for the French. I guess Davout's boys just threw some damn good dice. Now look at this corps at Wagram - see how many units are the same, now that's a veteran formation for you. |
