Chancellorsville Campaign

The following has been compiled by Keith McNelly.

Orders of Battle, 28th April - 6th May 1863:

The following Orders of Battle are based on the Osprey Campaign Series 56, "Chancellorsville 1863" and Stackpole’s "Chancellorsville". The following points are worth consideration.

  1. Morale for the Army of the Potomac is recovering from very low levels over winter. To reflect this most brigades are rated M5 but with "No Elites" which effects melee ties only. Union infantry division exhaustion levels are set at 50%.
  2. Howard’s Corps causes further problems. On one hand sources indicate that XI Corps was considered to be of poorer quality than other Union formations. This however was not the primary reason for their rout on the afternoon of the 2nd May, indeed any formation deployed as the XI Corps would likely have acted the same. Not withstanding this I have chosen to apply a lower morale rating as some eleven of the 27 regiments had not seen battle. This is in some way countered however by the fact that some formations had seen action. Therefore the infantry elements of XI Coprs have been rated as M4 with elites (or veterans), but and with a 50% exhaustion level. Further each division of XI Corps had a single supporting battery, I have modelled this supporting battery as attached battalion guns. The combination of M4, with elites along with supporting battalion guns is probably a reasonable way to model this formation, and while weaker than other Union formations not drastically so.
  3. The Irish Brigade is very weak, some 500 men. They have been converged with the II Corps 1st Division, 1st Brigade and the Irish "brigade" are considered as being "Elites".
  4. The Iron Brigade is rated as morale 6.
  5. Union cavalry is a mixed bag, again plagued by command problems and indecision on how to use the cavalry. Most Union cavalry are rated M4, excluding Buford’s Regulars. All Union cavalry are considered as normal skirmishers and not advanced with repeaters, again to reflect the unclear role they should play in the campaign. Make them M5 or sharpshooters and any gamer will clearly now how to employ them!
  6. Rebel infantry and cavalry are rated as M5, 60% exhaustion, and all are considered to have elites present.
  7. Longstreet along with Hood’s & Pickett’s division’s from I Corps are not present.
  8. SB-H artillery, especially Rebel battalions, are made up of a mixture of different gun caliber’s and types. Therefore SB-H artillery move as field artillery and when used in counter-battery do not automatically generate a casualty for each hit inflicted, that is the target rolls for a saving throw.
  9. Corps or army assets may be commanded by any DC. Note also that some of these assets have exhaustion values but no dedicated commander.
