Notes:
- Austrian Corps Level Cavalry Regiments:
If you’re wondering where they are, I followed Martin Soilleux-Cardwell’s
lead and omitted them. They were used primarily for local scouting, escort and
courier duties.
- FeldJagers:
According to Dennis Showalters excellent book, "Railroads and
Rifles" by 1866, even the Austrian Jagers were trained in the mass
bayonet stosstaktik.. There are also accounts of them forming up in
mass and charging the Prussians. IMO, the best way to simulate this on the
battlefield is to mount them on 3" x 1.5" linear stands and make
them light infantry. While they will no doubt be spending most of their combat
time as skirmishers, this will still give them the ability to mount a suicidal
bayonet charge if their commander so desires. I also took away their
sharpshooter rating but kept their morale at 6.
- Fifth Brigade/Ist Corps:
This particular brigade was the old pre-war Holstein garrison. I’ve seen
other OOB’s that assign it IIIrd Corps and still others that say it was the
Prague Garrison. I simply assigned to Ist Corps. Given their
operational/strategic situation, they can use all the help that they can get.
- Light Cavalry Strength Points:
The Austrian Light Cavalry (Hussars and Dragoons) averaged about 750 men per
regiment at this time. In VnB terms, this comes out to 1.5 sp per stand. I
rounded it up to 2 sp’s . This actually represents their outstanding combat
effectiveness.
- Austrian 1st Light Cavalry
Division: Yes, these guys are that
good! Von Edelsheim is probably the best and most innovative cavalry commander
of the Continental Wars period (1854-78). I rated him as a corps commander to
reflect his command ability and I rated his brigade commanders as division
commanders to reflect the fact that he trained his brigades to operate
independently. They can also divide into cavalry skirmishers. If you really
want to give the Prussians problems, allow his troops to dismount with each
regiment forming 2 x 1-6 infantry skirmishers. BTW, von Edelsheim re-armed his
entire division with the Werndl Breechloading Carbine. Use the cartridge
carbine stats.
- Austrian Reserve Cavalry:
I lumped the Uhlans with the Kuirassiers rather than make them a separate
stand. They were classed as "heavy cavalry" anyway .
- Austrian 2nd Light Cavalry
Division: Although not quite as
flexible as the 1st, these regiments can also break down into
cavalry skirmishers.
