Stones River Errata & Modifications The following errata and modifications can be applied to the Stones River scenario published in the Volley & Bayonet scenario book "Battles of the American Civil War". They have been compiled from discussions on the Volley and Bayonet mailing list. Terrain: All the woods at Stones River should be rated as "dense". This means artillery can not move through the woods, unless assigned as battalion guns and infantry use the new ACW dense woods rule. Deployment - Union: Rousseau's position is not marked on the map. His division should be deployed some 24" down from the north table edge and 24" from the west table edge in reserve. Van Cleve's division was ordered to cross stones River and by 7am was across Stones River. It should therefore be deployed directly behind Wood's northern deployment edge. Optionally it can be deployed part way across representing a commitment to flank the Rebel right. Van Cleve's artillery starts limbered. On the Union right flank Sheridan's division starts stationary. Johnson's and Davis's artillery begins the battle disordered. Johnson's division posted on the right starts with one brigade back 12" in reserve, as is Johnson himself, leaving the forward artillery and infantry brigades out of command. All other Union infantry starts ordered, while Union artillery is unlimbered but not stationary. Deployment - Rebel: McGowan's division starts on the south board edge behind Wharton - as he was fooled by the dummy campfires in into swing further south - he actually should come up behind and to the rear of Johnson. All Rebel artillery can be deployed stationary, limbered or unlimbered as the player wishes. All infantry is ordered and may go stationary in the Rebel player turn if desired. The "part" of Breckinridge's division shown close to the union line is the "Orphan" brigade and does not the divisional artillery. The Confederates get 12" of trenches that extend across the middle of their army, this may be extened to include defences on the hill defended by the Orphan brigade. These trenches give +1 on morale and a saving throw vs all fire - not against melee. The Rebels had been there several days improving their position. Morale & Exhaustion Ratings: All artillery stands should be rated as M5 rather than M6 in-line with revised artillery ratings in VB&G. Adjust Confederate Exhaustion levels to the following values:
Adjust Union morale and exhaustion as follows: The Union pioneer brigade becomes a division without a divisional commander with an exhaustion of 2. It is treated as an army level formation and may be commanded by any DC or CC as normal. Rousseau's division starts with an exhaustion of 5 and rises to 6 at 4pm when reinforcements arrive. Negleys division was the only division whose troops were not engaged at Shiloh or Perryville. They can therefore be downgraded as follows: Negley's Division, Exhaustion = 3 / 4
Negley's division starts with an exhaustion of 3 rising to 4 at 4pm, when reinforcements arrive. |
