Champion Hill

An update to the Champion Hill scenario by Greg Novak.

Suggestions & Errata:

Champions Hill is one of the important battles of the Civil War, which is why I wanted it in the rules. The Confederate hope at Champions Hill is to defeat the Union in detail, which can happen if the North starts pushing on early and not waiting for reinforcements. For play balance give the Rebels the following reinforcements:

S.D Lee's Division, Exhaustion = 10

  • 1st Brigade               M5 [ ] [ ] [ ]
  • 2nd Brigade               M5 [ ] [ ] [ ]
  • 3rd Brigade               M5 [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ]
  • 4th Brigade               M5 [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ]
  • Divisional Artillery      M5 [ ] [ ] R-F
  • Divisional Artillery      M5 [ ] [ ] SB-F

Historically SD Lee sat out the battle protecting the Confederate supply trains. Roll for entry on the west board edge, with Lee entering on a 1 the first turn, 1,2, the second etc.

One other problem on Champion's Hill - the map was wrong. The upper end of the hill should be two levels high and wooded. This makes it much harder for the North to hit Stevenson without going into disorder - Historically Logan worked his way around the top of the hill and came in behind the Confederates.

The wood on top of the hill is a normal wood, which helpd explain why the Confederates were able to hang on for so long. Union troops attempting to climb the hill and advance through the woods find themselves lossing stremght points if they move too fast.

In addition Bakers Creek was on the orginial map (but is not on the published map), it swings down just off the west edge of the board, the first map was a foot wider. This effects the victory conditions.

A revised map follows - this has been kindly supplied by Antonio Plasencia.
