Lobositz, 1st October 1756

A 6mm full-scale replay of the battle of Lobositz by Fabrizio Davì, Rimini, Italy.

The following shots were taken August 2, 2006 during the refight of Lobositz which took place at the "Fumettificio Goblin" in Rimini. This is the first time "Volley & Bayonet" was played in Rimini and we are planning periodical refights to introduce more people to the rules. The models are from my collection and are from the "Heroics and Ros" 6mm range. The buildings are from "Hard Cover Design" and various manifacturers. The terrain was scratch-built by myself. All figures are based on V&B full scale bases and the scenario was played "straight from the box" from the original rulebook.

Unfortunately a strong rainstorm prevented most of the invited people to attend the refight: however me (Fabrizio Davì a.k.a. "altefritz") and the shop owner Alberto Borghini, decided to play anyway. I took the Prussians and Alberto the Austrians. After a short briefing the battle started with the 6.00 am move.

The Austrian avant-garde. The town of Lobositz is visible in the left  foreground. At the right of the small village of Welhotta the avant garde of eight Croat battalions supported by a Grenadier Regt.

The Prussian Army is in the valley ready to deploy. The Austrian main army is visible behind the marshy-banked Morellen Bach.

The Prussians attacked in force the Lobosch Hill whereas the bulk of the infantry moves to the sunken road, the cavalry covering the right flank. The Austrian contested the hill with the croats. In the meantime the Austrian cavalry attacked the Prussian cavalry by emerging in a pincer move from both the sunken road and the Morellen Bach.

Top: a view of the Austrian center behind the sunken road with the right-wing cavalry.

Right: the Prussian Army flooding the plain with Sullowitz castle in foreground.

Notice that, since it was the first time Alberto played V&B, we decided not to use the fog rule for ease of play.

Top: the battle for the Lobosch Hill with the croatian infantry in foreground supported by grenadiers against a  full Prussian division.

Left: the cavalry clash between the rightmost claw of the Austrian pincer and the Prussian cavalry.

Unfortunately (from my point of view, of course), a series of very bad rolls prevented the Prussian cavalry to annihilate the right claw, disordered by the passage of the Morellen Bach.
The Prussian infantry center closes to kill, whereas the right wing swepts the croats from the Lobosch Hill. However, since the Prussian cavalry was destroyed in the cavalry battle, and since the Austrian main army was still uncommited, (and since dinner time is approaching...) Frederick decides to concede the play to the Austrians!

It was a very enjoyable afternoon: the refight was fast, with a minimum of book-keeping. The rules where warmly appreciated; Volley & Bayonet is landed safely in Rimini. Next planned refights: Mollwitz, Chotusitz and Kolin
The "Team": on the left Field Marshal Browne (Alberto Borghini), whereas the bald-headed is nonetheless that the King of Prussia (Fabrizio Davì) with his Hereditary Prince Alessandro.
