French, Italian and Austrian Armies of 1859 in 6mm

The following has been compiled by Jean-Marc Largeaud. It covers the modelling of French, Italian and Austrian Armies of 1859 using Heroics & Ros Figures 1/300th or 6mm figures.

All figures are from the Heroics & Ros Franco Prussian War range except *(=Napoleonic) and **(=ACW).

France

Imperial Guard Infantry:

  • Chasseurs: NCF 3.
  • Zouaves: NCF 10.
  • Grenadiers. Nothing perfect here. However, you can use MFN 5*, MFN 20* grenadiers and chasseurs (Napoleonic), the new pack of Napoleonic grenadiers MFN43* Old Guard grenadiers attacking may also be used, but needs some additional work (not a great pack, IMO). Also, Austrian Grenadiers attacking, MAN 15* may be used with some work on bearskins.
  • Voltigeurs : MBN 19* British Napoleonic Infantry, stove pipe shako, attacking (again, some attention to headgear needed).

Imperial Guard Cavalry:

  • Cuirassiers, Guides: NCF 11 Cuirassiers.
  • Carabiniers: MFN 16 Carabiniers.
  • Dragoons: NCF 6.
  • Lancers: NCF 12.
  • Chasseurs: NCF 4.

Imperial Guard Artillery :

  • MFN 9*: Napoleonic Guard horse artillery and French FPW guns.

Line Infantry:

  • In campaign dress: NCF 1, NCF 2 ( otherwise try MBN 19* British Napoleonic Infantry, stove pipe shako, attacking).
  • Chasseurs: NCF 3 Chasseurs attacking.
  • Zouaves, Tirailleurs Algériens: NCF 10, MACW8**, MACW19** (ACW Zouaves).

Line Cavalry:

  • Cuirassiers: NCF 11 Cuirassiers.
  • Carabiniers: MFN 16 *Carabiniers.
  • Dragoons: NCF 6.
  • Lancers: NCF 12.
  • Chasseurs: NCF 4.
  • Hussars: NCF 5.

Artillery

  • MBN 26* British foot artillery (need some attention to headgear) and French FPW guns.

Piedmont

Infantry:

  • Line and grenadiers: Nothing is really equivalent here. If you want a shako close to the Italian ones, try MBN 19* British in stove pipe as above. If you prefer the greatcoat use French infantry NCF 1 and NCF 2.
  • Chasseurs des Alpes, chasseurs des Appennins: NCF 1and NCF 2 and / or MACW 3* Federal infantry skirmishing.
  • Bersaglieri: MACW 6**, MACW19**, Confederate infantry.

Cavalry :

  • Heavy cavalry: MBN 17* British Household cavalry (lances needed).
  • Light cavalry: MBN 11* British Light dragoons (some work on headgear and lances needed for the two lance armed regiments, or use MACW 15 Union lancers instead)

Artillery:

  • MBN 26* British foot artillery (with French FPW guns).

Austria

Infantry:

  • Line: If you want to depict Austrians with rolled greatcoats: Prussian Jaegers (NCP 3) and / or MPN 1* Prussian musketeers.
  • Line units with "bonnet de police": French Guards (NCF 8, NCF 9, you have to cut off the pompons).
  • Some Napoleonic British infantry attacking in shakos MBN 19*(and MBN 22*)may also be used, with some attention to headgear.
  • Chasseurs/Jaegers : Austrian Napoleonic Jaegers in hats (MAN 3*).

Cavalry:

  • Uhlans : use either Prussian Uhlans(NCP 4, NCP 5) or French lancers (NCF12).
  • Hussars : French Hussars in kepis(NCF5), and ACW Federal cavalry (MACW 4**, MACW 14**).
  • Dragoons/Chevaux-Legers : Austrian Napoleonic Dragoons(MAN 4*) or Bavarian light horse (NCP 14).

Artillery:

  • French Artillery(NCF 7).
