| The Battle
of Abu Agheila - 5th June 1967
This scenario was developed by Trevor Keighley of Australia. Background: On June 5th 1967, Israel launched a pre-emptive assault on the Egyptian defenses in the Sinai Desert. The key to the central Sinai was the crossroads at Abu Agheila. The Egyptians had established an entrenched position on a triple-layered ridge line, with minefields and substantial artillery support. Sharon's Armoured Division was to cut off this position from reinforcement from the north and south and then capture the crossroads itself. Orders of Battle: Egyptian
Israeli 38th Armoured Division, Ugda (Genl Sharon). Armour Division troops veteran
Egyptian forces then set up anywhere on the table, but not within 7" of the north, east, or south table edges. The Egyptian player may entrench any and all elements under his command. An entrenched element receives a +2 bonus when fired upon from the front or flank and a +1 bonus in close combat, as long as it is not contacted through the rear of the entrenchment. Entrenched troops cannot move for the duration of the game, however. If forced to recoil or flee, these elements are destroyed instead. The Israeli 14th Armour Brigade, the Mechanised Reconnaissance Battalion and the 99th Infantry Brigade, enter on the northern, eastern or southern table edge, or any combination thereof, on turn 1. The Israeli player also secretly marks a point on the western table edge. His helicopter reinforcements will enter within 6" of this point. Reinforcements: The first time the Israeli player rolls a "6" for command , the Paratroop Brigade riding in transport helicopters enters the table on the western edge, within 6" of the spot indicated by the Israeli player, before the game. Victory Conditions: Whichever side reaches its break point
first loses the battle. If after 18 turns neither side has reached Special Rules
The Map: Note: The maps were done simply on MSPaint. My sources were a variety of reference books, the most useful being Iron Fist - classic armoured warfare, by Bryan Perrett. However, I had difficulty finding any proper tactical maps. I had to "invent" them myself, sticking as closely to the discriptions as I could. Tables of Organisation & Equipment: The Division Organisations were were derived from the AH game Arab-Isreali Wars and Frank Chadwick's Combined Arms, a source book for his Command Decision game for Modern Warfare. I derived because for HOTT, I wanted to simplify the organizations down to about 12 elements. At least these two sources gave me a good idea of the balance of weapons within an Armoured Division.
