In the early 1980s I started building of my first 15mm army having been introduced to Renaissance wargaming and the Gush rules. In due course I changed to "De Bellis Renationis" or DBR. After a gap of several years, due to lack of opponents, I have blown the dust of my small collection of figures, supplemented it with additional purchases, and have once again deployed them for battle.

My primary interest in the period covered by the rules is the the English Civil War. It is in itself a wonderfully colourful period, both from the perspective of uniforms of the combatanats but also of the many historical characters. What wargamer hasn't heard of Prince Rupert, Oliver Cromwell or Montrose. The many famous battles, along with smaller ones raged across the gentle fields of England through to the highlands of Scotland and the occasionally the bogs of Ireland.

A regiment of 15mm English Civil War Parliamentarians, representing some 600 men, deployed for battle. These figures are from the old Mike's Model range and cast in the 1980s.

The more general period of history known as the Renaissance further expands the colour of this historical period. From a wargaming perspective it begins with the of the Italian Wars through the Wars of Religion and into and beyond the Thirty Years War. Not confined to Western Europe it expands to the nations of Africa and Asia and the New World.
