The Moon is a ball of rock, which orbits the Earth like Earth does the sun.

On the 21^st of July 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon. When he landed on the moon he said ''One small step for man, one huge step for mankind.'' Even though Neil was the first man to step on the moon there were other people who made the journey alongside him.

It was a race to see who could land a man on the Moon first: the Americans or the Russians, the Americans won. In 1961 the Russian Yuri Gagarin made the first manned spaceflight but the Americans still beat the Russians to the moon.
