L'Aigle Shower! |
On the 26th of April 1803 the people of L'Aigle in northeastern France. Which is about 160 kilometres west of Paris were startled by a storm that swept over their village. But this was no ordinary storm. It was a meteorite shower, which poured down onto a 13 kilometre long track.
Over 2,300 stones fell onto the village each weighed between seven grams and nine kilograms. Luckily no one was killed or injured but it was a terrible experience for the villagers. The shower occurred in daylight and there were many witnesses. Some said that before it started they heard loud explosions in the sky and saw brilliant lights.
Other villagers who picked up the stones reported that they were still hot.
A French Physicist, Jean Baptiste Biot carried out an investigation. He analysed some of the stones to find out what they were made out of. He confirmed that they were solid materials from outer space. Until then scientists doubted stories about stones from outer space.
