Two of the Malone family are known to have come to New Zealand, Bridget and Margaret.

BRIDGET MALONE

Bridget had arrived in New Zealand by 1893, when she is listed in the Selwyn electoral roll as living at Charing Cross doing domestic duties. By 1902 Margaret is also listed in the same electoral roll as Bridget. Perhaps Margaret and Bridget came out together to help Patrick Riordan on the Charing Cross farm when his wife Mary Burke became ill and died with consumption? This could imply that Patrick Riordan and Bridget and Margaret's mother, Margaret Riordan, were perhaps cousins. More research is needed! - one day!

Contact Me

My grandmother, Margaret Mary MALONE
was born in Ballinadrideen, Ballyhea Parish, Charleville, Ireland
on January 16th, 1876.
Her parents were Jeremiah Malone and Margaret Riordan.

So far, we know little about the Malones, but early in 2005 I was contacted by a Malone second cousin who had tracked me down via my webpages. He is an Irishman now living in New York. From the details he gave, I felt certain we would be fairly closely related, but he had heard of no New Zealand relations for his grandfather when he was growing up in Ireland.

However, he contacted the local parish priest and it became clear that our grandparents were in fact siblings. The priest gave a list of the children in the family of Jeremiah Malone and Margaret Riordan. They are:

Bridget Born 12/12/1868
John Born 15/12/1869

Maurice Born 27/11/1871
Mary Born 17/4/1874
Margaret Born 18/1/1876
Patrick Born 29/8/1877
Nano Born 21/6/1879
Jeremiah Born 18/7/1882

Bridget Malone married John Barrett Norris, a widowed farmer, in August 1917 in New Plymouth. She lived in the back country inland from Stratford, at Tututawa. She died on 15 May 1951 and is buried in Stratford.
