Robert Shiel witnessed the baptism of his granddtr Isobell Shiel on 16 Nov 1729 Jedburgh, ROX; entry (very helpfully) reads: James Shiel Smith in houstoun had a daur born the Sixth Instant & baptized this day Named Isobell William Christie Elder in houstoun & Robert Shiel fayr to the forsd James Shiell Witnesses" (love the inconsistency of spelling Shiell within the one entry).3 His surname was also spelt Robert Shiell but what's in an extra "L"?1
