     Robert Shiel witnessed the baptism of his granddtr Janet Shiel on 19 Jun 1716 at Jedburgh, ROX, SCT; entry reads: James Shiel Smith in Houston had a daughter born the 9th Instant & baptizd this day called Janet Robert Shiel his father and John Sheil in Swinie witnesses" (John assumed to be a brother).¹
     Robert Shiel witnessed the baptism of his granddtr Isobell Shiel on 16 Nov 1729 Jedburgh, ROX; entry (very helpfully) reads: James Shiel Smith in houstoun had a dau^r born the Sixth Instant & baptized this day Named Isobell William Christie Elder in houstoun & Robert Shiel fay^r to the forsd James Shiell Witnesses" (love the inconsistency of spelling Shiell within the one entry).³ His surname was also spelt Robert Shiell but what's in an extra "L"?¹
