Overview

To best study important battles of World War Two, it is useful to have an accurate understanding of the terrain over which they were fought. For this reason, we have used the "Terrain Maker" polystyrene hexagon terrain system (From GHQ Models) to accurately portray well known battlefields. An example is given here - the Meuse river crossing of Irwin Rommel on 13 May 1940.

When laid out on the table, these polystyrene hexagons have a habit of sliding round. For this reason we have designed a series of tables and other solutions, to hold the hexagons in place.

Crush Table

Current Project

1. A wooden table with a working area of 238 cm by 157 cm (approximately 8 foot by 5 foot), with a lip around this working area.

2. Lip to be 12 mm high, and the lip should be adjustable - to be able to be moved in towards the centre of the table by up to 15 cm by use of screws.

3. The working area - a space of 238 cm x 157 cm by 1.2 cm deep is to have polystyrene hexagon tiles placed inside. To ensure these tiles sit firmly against each other, the sides of the table need to be adjustable and be able to be screwed inwards to tighten up the tiles.

4. Firm legs, well constructed to support the weight of several adults leaning on the table.

5. A tabletop which will fit over the top of the table, with insert or lugs fitting down into the working area, to allow the table to be used as a meal table.

6. Overall appearance similar to a pool table, with the cavity inside being 238 cm x 157 cm x 1.2 cm deep.

7. Table to be made of pine, finished and varnished.

8. Table to be designed so it will fit through a normal doorway.

9. Models of the table contents, and samples of the tiles are available.

Further Projects

More projects are envisaged, and will be commissioned as current projects are completed.
