THE SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE

The Christian Community is founded upon the living power of resurrection - the power that streams in love from the deed of Christ. The power that overcomes separation meets the will that expresses itself when a man and a woman seek to weave destiny together on the way to unifying what is separate. The marriage sacrament brings the blessing and power of resurrection to those men and women who seek to enter and sustain a community of life together in mindfulness of Christ.

A couple seeking this sacrament will need to make contact with a priest as soon as possible following their decision. Normally several conversations will be needed as a preparation. Their will be an opportunity to share and reflect upon the paths that have led to the meeting and upon the decision to determine a mutual path for the future.

The sacrament itself calls for the marriage to recognise the wider social community within which a couple's life together is woven. This recognition is expressed in the form of two individuals being invited to witness what is taking place. They are appointed by the individuals who are entering marriage. They form an integral part of what takes place through the sacrament.

In many ways, this sacrament shows us the way to our future as men and women together. For the living image of the Risen Christ shines as blessing throughout the sacrament of marriage. His presence amongst human beings is what leads us to the resolution of our differences and to the power to transform ourselves. The mission of marriage can begin to be experienced as resurrection itself.
