THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION The transformation from childhood to adolescence is in many cultures recognised and honoured. The young people may be set apart for a time, culminating in some form of meaningful ritual. Nowadays in societies such as our own, the biological, emotional and identity changes of puberty often take place without any particular social or spiritual recognition. The sacrament of Confirmation follows a time of preparation for the young person in the company of their peers and led by a priest. This can take place over several months in their 14th year. The sacrament itself brings something 'firm' to the individual - it 'confirms' their nature and being, and it shows them the source of strength and comfort for their journey through life. The
young person takes a firm step towards adulthood and receives communion
for the first time. They continue to be guided by the older people close
to them, but they also begin to find the capacity to guide themselves.
The sacrament of Confirmation and the preparation for it provides an
important moment in the lives of those young people who find their way
to this profound confirmation of their being on earth.
