THE SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING

As a preparation for crossing the threshold known as death, the one nearing the end of a life can receive assurance and strength for their further journey beyond earth existence. When the dying process moves towards its culmination, anointing with consecrated oil takes place as part of priestly care at this time. Normally those nearest to the one who is preparing to depart will be present. Ideally this final sacrament is received around three days before the final breath, however it can happen sooner or later than this. The occasion may also involve the sacramental consultation and final communion.

Dying can be viewed as a process which is with us for the better part of our lives. A rich sacramental life can reveal the depths of this process as we see that indeed death is the necessary companion of earthly life. As we reach the culmination of this process the sacrament of anointing can be received without fear or doubt in the face of what we call death. We can be prepared for what is to come in a spirit of grace and truth.
