Porangahau [New
Zealand, 2001]
The longest place name in use in the world, according to the Guinness
Book of Records, belongs to a modest hill near the Central Hawke's Bay
settlement of Porangahau.
The Maori name, Taumatawhakatangihanga-
koauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoro-
nukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu, translates as: "The place where Tamatea,
the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains,
known as landeater, played his flute to his loved one."
