Well, spring has brought its new additions to the Club and we congratulate Daphne & Chris on the birth of their daughter, Tamsen and to Mike & Janet on the birth of their daughter (yet to be named). Daphne assures me she knew how it happened, but according to Mike, when discussing the issue while waiting for our fish & chip orders last Friday, he said "it just happened" - he can't understand it and considers he could be called up for stud duties next!!.
We are all delighted with your news and no doubt Xmas will be just a little more special for both families.
It proved to be a little difficult in getting a team of three from the Club to pit their debating skills against the Levin Club, but a big thanks to Tanya, Graeme and Nigel who accepted the challenge. It proved to be a very enjoyable evening and the Levin toastmasters were most welcoming and were, like us, learning the skills of debating. Obviously the learning is not just for the speakers, but also for the Chairman and judges and it was felt that both Clubs could get together early in the New Year for a workshop on these aspects.
Stu Pescini chief judge said that as he was from the Levin Toastmasters, there was no way Levin were going to lose and therefore they sneaked home as the winners. We accepted his decision and warned him of the consequences. (ha ha)
.Best of luck to Rebecca who is representing the Club at an Oral Reading Competition being held at the Kapi-Mana Club in the next week or two. No doubt she would like some support from Club members, so have a chat to Rebecca to find out more about this competition….
I thought the change of venue at Harcourts conference room for one of our Club meetings in October was most welcome. It's amazing what different surroundings and room configuration can do when you are speaking. Well done to Nu who organised it and from what I can gather, Linda can't wait to get back there again, so she can sit in the window with her red light???
It was nice to have Ray Wolken with us and to present various awards.
Also nice to have the Area E5 Governor, Velma Knight visit a month ago. A delightful person who enjoyed her evening with us and the fact that she could take part, rather than just be a visitor.
Congratulations to Simon for achieving his Competent Leader
Award. Simon is one who can put his own interpretation on a
subject, which makes life easier for both he and us. I enjoy his
contribution to the Club. Keep up the good work Simon.
Also congrats to Linda and Peter for achieving their CTM's. Ten speeches completed, now you branch off into topics that you choose and there is certainly plenty of choice here.
Welcome to two more new members, Robyn Crimp and Roger Green. We trust you will enjoy your learning experience with us and we know you will add something new to the Club which we can all learn from.
Club Christmas Dinner.
It has been decided, that the club Christmas get-together will be held at the Olive Grove Café on Thursday 11th December, 7pm. The Olive Grove is providing three menus for us to select from , which will be discussed tonite with you. The Club will provide some wine, beer and fruit juice, but once the supply has run out, you can buy it from the Café or you can byo wine only. Spirits are also available from the café.
Marie will have more details on the evening once they have been finalised.
We
now have a suggestion box??? Why?? Well at a recent Club meeting, I
suggested that perhaps we don't look after our Club members as well
as we could, OR perhaps you have some great ideas
which we can incorporate into the Club programme, OR
whatever. The whole idea is to ensure, that we as a Club meet your
expectations and any suggestions placed in the box will be
considered by your committee at their monthly meetings. We look
forward to your contributions.
A request from Daphne (VP Education) - she would like to hear from you if you have a speech ready, so that it can be programmed in to the schedule. Likewise, should you have to cancel a speech spot allocated to you, please let her know asap, so that she can slot the next person in from the waiting list. Thanks…
Now something on the lighter side - Someone out there either has too much spare time or is deadly at Scrabble.. (rearranging and using the letters only once as in an anagram, you can get)
GEORGE BUSH -: HE BUGS GORE.
DORMITORY -: DIRTY ROOM
PRESBYTERIAN : BEST IN PRAYER
MOTHER IN LAW : WOMAN HITLER
ELEVEN PLUS TWO: TWELVE PLUS ONE
SNOOZE ALARMS : NO MORE Z'S
SLOT MACHINES -: CASH LOST IN ME

Finally - as this is the last newsletter for 2003, the Committee wishes all our members a very enjoyable festive season with family and friends.
