Fellow Toastmasters,
Welcome back to the 2003 year and another year of developing confidence in our speaking. I'm quite amazed at how well Toastmasters as an organisation is being recognised by business's and other training organisations. It seems that speech and how you project yourself at meetings, interviews, social gatherings and general conversation is an influential part of your personal development. Whether this is at your place of employment, or speaking to your family, children or grandchildren, the benefits are obviously huge. So keep up the good work, we do have some very talented speakers in our Club and we can all learn from each others evaluations the effective art of communication.
Our first night back on January the 16th, brought with it a few nerves and butterflies , having had over a month away from our Club night. However, all those who made speeches performed magnificently and we were eased back into table topics. Daniel chaired a great meeting and achieved the difficult task of having five speeches, table topics and all other components of the meeting completed right on the dot of 9.30pm. (keep him on)
Daphne provided a programme with a difference on the 30th January. Not only did we have to try and guess who the Club member in the sketch was, but were put into teams of three for Table Topics - past, present & future. A nice variety and what a sketch!!!!!!!
Apparently a lot of people believe the longest word in the English language (excluding specialised scientific words and nonsense words) is the word
"antidisestablishmentarianism". The meaning of the word is perhaps reasonably obvious, but to clarify, the Oxford English Dictionary defines it as "opposition to the disestablishment of the Church of England" However, this has been succeeded by the word "pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis" 45 letters. The definition of this word is "a lung disease caused by breathing in certain particles and was first recognised as the longest word on February 23, 1935 in the New York Herald-Tribune, page 3.
You should have by now received your new roster which takes us through to April 10th. Ensure you available for the jobs listed on the roster, or if not available, let Ian know or the Chair of that particular meeting. Thank you.
At our committee meeting held on the 23rd January,
It was confirmed that the Club will be hosting the next Speechcraft Course commencing 3rd July, for 8 consecutive weeks. Encourage workmates, family members, friends to now think about the benefits of such a course, so that we have up to ten taking part. A co-ordinator for the course is now being sought, so if you are interested, or would like to find out more about the position, speak to Pres, Alan.
As your committee has been quietly working away on a project called "Fly The Flag" initiated by Toastmasters further up the ladder, we have one task left to complete and will be asking for 30minutes to an hour of your time, one Saturday soon. This will be between the hours of 11am-2pm in the Coastlands Shopping Mall (yes to be confirmed). It is quiet simply a task to promote our Club and Toastmasters and we will have a display (a show and tell) to put to the public. Coastmasters have been asked if they would like to join in with us on this.
Subs for the coming six months are due soon, and the committee is pleased to advise, that we can once again reduce them.. Thanks to the exchange rate on the finance markets, with the US dollar running above the 54cent mark, the sub for existing members is going to be $60. This fee covers the rental of the hall, equipment needed by the Club, such as manuals, and fees to the International Toastmasters Organisation. New member fees are worked out on a pro-rata basis.
New officers for the 2003-2004 will be required to be nominated and elected in May. There are a number of existing committee members quite prepared to continue on, but we would like to see a new face or two. We trust you will consider putting yourself up for a position (if possible) I can assure you, the positions are not onerous, but important for the stability of the Club. The meetings are short and to the point also.
He advises that the 2003-2004 District Officer nominations close on 23rd Feb 2003. If you would like to be considered or wish to nominate someone else to represent your Area/District, please contact your Area Council Members being: Club President, VP Education, VP Membership. Nomations to be sent to Peter Hunt via our Club President, by Monday 17th.
Final reminder of Club Officer Training, Wednesday 19 Feb 5.50pm to 8.15pm Senior Room, Mezzanine Floor, Wellington Central Library, Victoria St, Wgtn. And Thursday 20 Feb same time.
