Introduction

The Jury Hill Gliding Club operates from Papawai Airfield just east of historic Greytown in the picturesque Southern Wairarapa . The club specialises in low cost training using winch launching with the gliding site offering some of the best soaring conditions in New Zealand.

Flying occurs every weekend, public holiday and during the week by arragment (weather permitting). The club operates from other airfields from time to time and also holds week long intensive training courses during the year.

Location

Greytown is situated a little over an hours drive from Wellington. Papawai Airfield lies about 3km east of Greytown near the confluence of the Ruamahanga and Waiohine rivers on the western side of Jury Hill.

From State Highway 2 at Greytown turn east down Papawai Road (signposted) at the Challenge Petrol Station and follow the road to a Y junction. Take the left branch (signposted) and follow the road about1 km to the gate (signed) on the right. Follow the track through the gate until you come to the clubhouse and hanger.

  • Greytown with its varied cafes and restaurants, numerous boutiques and historic buildings.
  • Papawai Marae just south of the airfield which was once the seat of the Maori Parliament.
  • Vineyards and wineries of Martinborough.
  • QEII Gardens and Vintage Aircraft Museum at Masterton.
  • Southern Wairarapa country including the Putangirua Pinnacles to the south, Riversdale Beach to the east and Lake Wairarapa to the southwest.

Club Facilities
The airfield consists of two strips allowing operations in most weather conditions. The club currently operates two dual-seat trainers and one single-seat sailplane. There are other gliders privately owned by club members.

Launching is primarily by winch with aerotow available by arrangement.

The clubhouse contains beds for overnight accommodation, a kitchen, toilets and a hot shower. Next to the clubhouse is a barbecue and grassed tent area.

Trial Flights
$50 which includes the first flight, 3 month club membership with further flying at club rates. Vouchers are available at the airfield or send a cheque for $50 to
