The Keel-Billed Toucan - Notes

Habitat

1. Lowland forest and forest borders.

2. Found south Mexico to northern Columbia.

3. Mainly in Belize.

4. National bird of Belize.

5. Canopy dweller.

Description

1. 50 cm long, 20 inches long.

2. Huge yellow, orange, red, green and black bill.

3. 4 toes on each foot,2 face forward,2 face backward.

4. Bill one third of body.

5. Genus: Ramphastos (R.).

6. R. Species: Sulfuratus.

7. Green skin around eyes.

Food

1. Fruits, birds' eggs, insects, reptiles i.e. lizards, snakes, etc.

2. Favourite fruit: banana passion-fruit.

3. Puts bill up in air with berry in it, tosses up in air, catches berry with bill.

Adaptation

1. Adapted to being fruit eater.

2. Adapted bill to be light and long to reach fruit.

3. Good eye sight.
