Notes for JOSEPH BENNETT:

Joseph Bennett is noted in Church wardens accounts on 25th October 1823 Entry reads "Cash recieved from Joseph Bennett rent for the Town house One Pound'

The town house may have been used for housing the poor of the parish but no longer used for that purpose since the opening of a Union Workhouse which centralised the housing of the poor.

He continued to rent the Town house until 1829.

In the 1842 Clopton Tithe apportionment which lists landowners and some tenents Joseph is occupying a cottage and garden owned by Rumsey Issac BARRETT

The 1841 census shows Joseph aged 60 Labourer and Elizabeth aged 60.

Notes for DAVID BENNETT:

On his marriage info to Sarah BROOM David is refered to as a Widower? But I cannot find info about this first marriage.

There was a son from that marriage, also named David and he was born in Clopton in 1828 and married Maira Hazelwood in 1864 - their children were Willam and Grace. In the 1881 census Maira's mother Elizabeth Hazelwood was living with David and Maira aged 87.

David Bennett is mentioned in the Church wardens accounts in 1843. He is listed for unpaid rent - in the 1848-49 accounts David Bennett is renting some parish land and pays 11 shillings and 6 pence rent.

There is a death entry for a David BENNETT 9/1/1902 aged 76 at Colpho Suffolk UK, this is Davids son from his first marriage.

Dying 1925 aged 84 yrs and 2 months?

John a farm labourer, and his brother Joseph occupation unknown, aged 21 and 18 respectively went to South Africa on the 'John Vanner'. John was headed for the Hon. Henry Barrington in Knysna, presumably to work for him.

This is the report for that voyage -

John Vanner:

Departed Southampton 4 Jan 1862, arrived Table Bay 10 Mar 1962.

"The ship was clean, comfortable and well ventilated. Cases of scarlet fever

and measles were treated. Two men were admitted to hospital on arrival.

Fifty children attended school with most satisfactory results.

"The surgeon reported that the immigrants were generally of a low class with

dirty habits. He suggested that in future matrons should be given a copy of

the duties required of them before they undertook service and all immigrants

should arrive with clean linen and no liquor on their persons or in their

boxes. He deplored the filthy state in which some of them had arrived at the

depot.

"Later the IBC reported that a large number of these immigrants were found

to be unsuited to the requirements of the colony and pointed out to the

Immigration Agent in England that permit cases required utmost care in

selection."

Notes for ROBERT BENNETT:

There is great mystery about Roberts place of birth. On his marriage certificate and on his Death cert as well as on the birth cert of his son William John BENNETT, he says he was born in Burnley Lancashire UK. This cannot be proven, but research has shown that he was most certainly baptised on the 31st May 1880, aged 8 weeks, in the Wesleyan Church, Cape Town South Africa.

Because Robert refused to talk about himself or his family Mabel was forbidded to marry him - for her sins she was disowned by her family until just before her fathers death in his 90's

Evars Jnr was buried in the Reigate cenetery and his parents ashes were taken from South Africa to the UK and placed in his grave with him when they died in the 1940's. Evars died aged 17 years of an 'Ulcerated Larynx'.

Notes for MARY ANN BENNETT:

What a sad life Mary Ann had her husband died in 1913, her son Reginald aged 22 years in 1920 and her daughter Nita aged 14 years in 1922. She was to join the Community for the Resurrection at Grahamstown South Africa as Sister Ann Mary and died there on the 16th April 1950.
