The Black family were from Rockcliffe Cross near Carlisle in Cumbria, Norhern England. Family legend says the Black family were originally MacGregors from Ayrshire, but changed their name to Black and fled over the Solway Firth after supporting the 'wrong' side in the 1715 rebellion.

Family informatioon is from the family register in the Black Bible, transcribed by a descendant, Vivian Powell.

Two Black brothers were missionaries who worked in the Solomon Islands - these were probably Edward and William.

James Black was a Congregational minister. He married three times, and had one daughter, who died young.
