Introduction
Henri Jean Le Bailly was brought up in Jersey in the Channel Islands, where the family had lived since about 1750. Previously the family lived in Normandy, but were among the thousands of Huguenots who fled religious persecution in France. Henri emigrated to New Zealand in 1883 with his wife and most members of his wife's family. Henri and Sissie had four children, and lived in Auckland, Kamo, and the Waikato.

The information below is collected from a variety of sources, and will not necessarily be correct. I update it whenever I learn something new. Dates of birth, marriage or death are as close as I have been able to get so far. Please email me with any queries. I am always happy to receive additions or corrections.

d. 1794. buried Feb 8th, St Saviour, Jersey

Thomas and Madelaine lived at Try-le-bois, Athis, Normandy. They were Huguenots and in 1750 fled to Jersey. Several versions of the following story have been handed down in the family.

'Thomas Le Bailly dressed as a peasant, took a horse with a pannier of apples on each side, the Bible in one pannier, his baby son in the other, his wife behind him, and went through the gates of Caen (St Malo?) to escape in a fishing boat to Jersey. As they passed through the gates a suspicious guard thrust his sword into one of the panniers, and struck the one with the Bible - not the child.'

It is believed the two little daughters were kept in a convent in Rennes, France, where their names were discovered by Madame Sohier de Vermandois, who was married to a Le Bailly, on a list in the convent in 1858.

Louis and Marie lived in Jersey, at first in St Brelade, then in St Saviour. Family papers include a document, in French, an 'extract from the register of burials of the parish of St Saviour, Isle of Jersey'. This extract certifying that Louis Le Bailly was buried on 18 March 1808, is dated 5th May 1823, and is signed by Edouard Durell , A.M., Rector of St Saviour. Presumably it was necessary for legal reasons - any explanation would be gratefully received.

(with grateful thanks to Alex Glendinning for providing five extra siblings and baptismal details)

Jean, the eldest son, was a lieutenant in the Navy. He was taken prisoner in 1803 and imprisoned at Verdun. While in France he married a second time. His wife was Ann Chevarry, and she bore two children: Charles, an artist, & Lucie.
After his release Jean established a school in France at Coutances attended by several Jersey boys including his nephew Joshua.

Marie-Elizabeth married Rev. Jean Sohier in St Saviour on 1st June 1806, and had five children. Her son Jean was bron in 1809, married Marie's niece Anne Le Bailly, and became the Protestant pastor at Nantes.

Any further information on any of the godparents would be very welcome. Is Jean Le Bailly, godparent to Thomas, his older brother (b. 1777)?

Louis married twice; first Matilda Jane Stewart (6 children), and second Winifred Mary Lucas.

Matilda didn't marry. In the 1871 census she was living with her brother Joshua in St Saviour, Jersey. and in the 1881 census she was living with her sister Susanna Boileau in Devon. At the time of her death aged 90 she was living with her niece, a daughter of her twin sister Emily.

Grace married Inspector Stevens of the Royal Irish Court. I know nothing more about her except that she was still alive in 1905 as she appears in a family photograph.

Any additional information on any of the following would be very much appreciated.

Jersey information:

Birth (confirmation) of Cecil Perrot LE BAILLY, b. about Feb/Mar 1861, St Saviour, Jersey - parents Jean LE BAILLY and Elizabeth Sharp PERROT.
Birth date? Gender?

Death of Rosa LE BAILLY (née Johnston), 1880, Dec 25. First wife of Henri Jean Le Bailly. Did she die in Jersey? A letter from Macpelah cemetery lists her name on 'sepulchre 133'.

Marriage of Jean LE BAILLY and Elizabeth Sharp PERROT, possibly in 1849 in St Helier?

Death of Joshua LE BAILLY, confirmation it was Jan 5 1846. Family papers say he died in June 1846, but a gravestone in St Saviour says he died Jan 5 - however this gravestone has several mistakes.

Death of Thomas LE BAILLY, possibly in St Brelade, possibly in 1777.

Death of Anne LE BAILLY, after 1786. She was the daughter of Thomas Le Bailly and Madeleine Collin, born 1753, St Brelade.

Any information about the children of Joshua Le Bailly's second marriage, Alexander (b. about 1864) and Margaret (b. about 1865).
