Introduction
James Goggins was born about 1815-19, probably in County Westmeath,
Ireland, where he worked as a labourer. His parents were Billy
and Mary, and he had five brothers and a sister.
James married Mary Newman, and they had three children, two girls and a boy. On 25 Feb 1847 James was tried and convicted of stealing meal and bacon. He was sentenced to seven years transportation. He was transported from Dublin to Tasmania on the 'Pestonjee Bomanjee', leaving 5 Aug 1848, and arriving 2 Jan 1849.
At the time of his transportation, he was described as a Catholic, aged 33, married with 3 children, and a farm labourer. He couldn't read or write. His height was 5' 3 ", he had a fresh complexion, large head, brown to grey hair, brown whiskers and eyebrows, broad visage and forehead, grey eyes, medium nose and mouth, and a broad chin. He had a red mark on his breast, and a large scar on his neck.
James Goggins applied for a free passage for his wife and family on 19.6.50 and again on 23.2.51 - both requests were refused, but the family did join him in Tasmania. Family sources say he returned in about 1856 to Ireland to get them, returning to Tasmania via Western Australia.
James Goggins died 12 Feb 1884, in the General Hospital, Hobart, aged 67. His occupation was given as gardener.
