Evans Family History

Introduction

Tom and Lydia Evans emigrated with their family to New Zealand in 1952 from Glan Conwy in North Wales, where they farmed at Rhyd Ifan.

Thomas Evans was born at a farm called Nant Erw in the Llandewi district of Denbighshire, North Wales in 1903. His parents were Evan Evans and Hannah Jones. Evan married Hannah shortly after her first husband's death in 1897, when she was left with a family of five young children. Evan had followed two of his brothers to work in the coal mines in Pennsylvania, U.S.A., but returned to Wales to marry Hannah. Evan's brothers remained in the United States, but William made a trip back to Wales with his son in 1906.

Contact between the Welsh / New Zealand and American families was resumed in February 2003 when a descendant of William Evans found this website.

* Naming conventions used to assign the first name of the father to the children, so 'William Evans' was son of 'Evan Thomas', and Evan Thomas' father would have been named 'Thomas', with his father's surname.

Soon after their marriage Evan and Hannah moved to Nant Erw, near Pandy Tudur in Denbighshire. They lived there until about 1921, when they moved to Nant y Wrach, between Pandy Tudur and Gwytherin.

Ifan married Eluned and had two daughters.
Dafydd married Annie.
Tudur died during the influenza epidemic at the end of World War I.
Thomas married Lydia May Williams, and had seven children, four sons and three daughters. They farmed at Rhyd Ifan near Glan Conwy, and emigrated to New Zealand in 1952.
John Griffyth married Blodwen and had five daughters.
Albert married Doris and had three daughters.

Thomas lived at Aber Llyn.
Jemimah married John Harker and had at least six children. John and Jemimah were both lead miners. They lived at Nant y Fedwen.
