STONE RELIEF 2:Mother and child
|

|
We have had five homebirths at Rainbow
Valley. The fifth was in April 2000. The third was in February 1993. A
Dutch couple who travel around the world on a juggling tour came to
Rainbow Valley to check it out for a suitable birth place. Their
ambition was for the baby be born in their tepee into the nomad tribe.
Unfortunately on the day of the birth one of our rainstorms raged and
the dream proved impractical. The event was rescheduled to the upstairs
of the Community House. |

It became the impetus for a study series of photos
and carvings. My first carving on the right was alright if you did not
look all around, because I had a couple of profiles right but not all;
it did not meet in the right proportion in the back. I Decided on
another one which is listed under woodcarvings. Then when my partner did
her big sculpture in Oamaru stone, there were big off cuts. A 70 mm
thick slice was turned into the above illustrated relief carving. |

|
| A 18 mm thick particle board backing
screwed into the stone, shaped at the same time and painted white is
mounted with aluminum fixtures so that the work can be supported by two
screws in a dwang. |
