RELIEF CARVINGS of history 1

In 1642 Abel Tasman discovered Aotearoa and named it Staten land which was later changed to Niew Zeeland (now New Zeeland). The Dutch ships of the time always had a figure head as a guardian spirit. In the case of the Heemskerck, one of the two ships under Tasman’s command, the figurehead is a lion. Here , in two dimensional form depicted in the Dutch heraldry form of a rampant lion. The saber and teeth are bone inserts. On the opposing side is a figure from a Maori carved canoe prow, the Mania. This is a spiritual being in Maori mythology.

GUARDIAN SPIRITS II  

This is a composition work of two deep relief rimu panels ( dimensions: 450x240x50 ) of two legendary spiritual figures figures. The left panel is pierced and has been darkened by oiling and is entitled "Manaia". The right panel has been waxed and is entitled "Dutch rampant lion". Price $ 460.
