WOODCUTS 8

Dance

I did a series of photographs recording several dance sequences. My model was studying dance at the time too, so there were no instructions on my part. I did several larger studies using custom board and plywood. They were single images frozen in time. I wanted to capture the movement. So I tried a sequence; of the same person but some five to ten seconds apart. This was also trying out a subject for an engraving, so I tried to get my lines as thin as possible.

The board I used was rimu but there must have been some natural repellent for the ink not to take in the top half, so making a  horizon.

On this scale, the facial expressions are hard to execute.

This captures the dance better
