WOODCUTS 5
| Amber
and Snip |
 |
Some years ago, the print record says 1993, I went
for an early winter morning walk to take some pictures from the Anatoki
track. Our dog Snip was coming along. At the bottom of the saddle was
Amber. This was a back lit scene also. Snip was eyeing Amber and Amber was
eyeing me. Snip is behaving herself. After all, a horse is bigger then a
cow and this one was free as well, not behind a fence or tied up.
Therefore not to be barked or snapped at. |

These tracks were put in for gold miners
about 150 years ago. The Anatoki track is benched and graded to enable
supply trains of mules to penetrate deep into the interior of the
forest. A mini gold rush developed with a camp at Forks hut about 5 to 7
hours walk from us. Our place too, was a gold mining camp. In the walnut
paddock was a hotel for them. Nothing remains of their presence, except
the walnut trees, drifts of daffodils and tailings. The latter are heaps
of rocks shifted by hand to divert the river. The sand between the
stones can then be riffled and the gold panned out. |
