WOODCUTS 4
| Rainbow
Valley |

Our place was named by the first people
of our community because it rains a lot more then in town (Takaka, 11 km
away, 1000 inhabitants). Often there is a rainbow in the Western sky.
There are days when it rains three days in succession.
In the early days this was a problem because we did not have
the internal spaces we have now.

In fact we were all camping. There were little huts
and a lean to to the barn had a temporary stove, wetback and hot water
cylinder installed. On rainy days we could take it easy and cook waffles
with whipped cream for breakfast. Unfortunately, the kids had nothing to
do either, their idea of fun was to run around the stove, which was in
the middle of the space, chasing each other. Despite a variety of
offered alternative activities, such as stories and drawing etc. they
still managed to run around often enough to send adults spare. |
