WOODCUTS 1: Kate

Woodcut prints.

Woodcuts is an extension of surface decoration in wood carving for me and an extension of another interest: Photography. The scale is different with modeling in reverse and in a 3 mm plane.

I find tremendous appeal in the fact that this is the earliest method of reproduction and communication on paper. Before that communication to the public was through relief pictures. I like to engrave fine lines yet keep the effect of the grain (i.e. not engraving on end grain, but on plank wood). In the beginning I hated to cover the wood in ink ... but now I scratch the surface even more in order to get the effect of texture on the print.  They are all printed by hand and register some variations in burnishing. They therefore can be classified as artist proofs - each a unique print. Where colored ink is used you can choice black as an alternative. Editions are printed on Croft acid free paper. Ink used is Morison, water base or oil base.

I have started with this one to show how the backlighting appeals to me. Also, when artists work in colour, crayon or pencil I like that more, even though I like Black and White photographs also for their dramatic contrast and have a shared darkroom for developing and printing my own prints.

I sometimes work from a photographic images, drawing and working freehand with the cutting tool, as opposed to working with a photographic transfer to the block. This looks like going in reverse, technology wise. But it appeals to me, as I have already said. And something gets added as subconscious input.

It is a very small edition size, but the same print in black and white is available as a computer print, A4 size, with 20 mm margins. Printed on HP premium inkjet paper.

Price $ 10.
