PLYWOOD BIRD SCULPTURES: huia

The huia pair is trying to capture something that has been lost to us through lack of balance. Because their precious tail feathers became an item of fashion they met their demise. Yet they were the only bird pair to develop their tools ( beaks ) differently so as to optimize their effort for the search of food. The male developed a short strong beak to chisel rotten wood, to expose and consume grubs. The female developed a longer, curved, slender beak for probing and prizing grubs the male could not reach; real co-operation.

They are rough sanded, but smoothed with four coats of paint, two white, two teal blue and a wash of black over the top.

Price $ 180 each or $ 360 for the pair.
