WHITE HERONS model 6 |
|
The white heron is one of the most common birds in the world, but not in
New Zealand. Here it is at its southern hemisphere range and rare. It breeds only beside
the Waitangiroto river, Westland. It has long mating plumes which were prized by
the Maori and kept in special carved boxes, papa hou, when not worn by the
chiefs. (rangatira) The Kotuku was sacred to them.
I have only seen a white heron once in Golden Bay.
