The
picture shows model 1 representing the white faced heron. The ply wood has been
rough sanded, leaving marks to represent feathering. All models are
waterproofed. This model is stained blue and is further protected by two coats
of epoxy resin.
These sculptures are designed using the oldest material for carving, wood,
in the modern way. The wood is peeled in layers and laminated into ply and
tanalised for outdoor use. I then laminate further using waterproof aerodux glue
and expect to maintain the minimum ten year’s life expectancy given by the
manufacturer. There are two options:
1. The ply stained to show the wood
grain, protected by two coats of epoxy resin. ("E" behind the model
number)
2. The ply painted with four coats of solar guard paint ("P"
behind the model number.) The life expectancy can be increased by placing the
sculpture in a position sheltered from the weather.
The legs are 6.5 mm stainless steel rods, which are extra long, to stick
in the ground. The sculpture is easily shifted to a new location when mowing.
With a bit of wind, the sculpture becomes animated through movement of the
springy steel.
The patterns made by the glue lines add interest to the natural grain.
