MAORI MYTHS and LEGENDS 9

Hine-titama

Tane, the god of forests and birds also is the father of mankind, by making the body of the first woman out of clay. Then he breathed life into her and she became his wife. Her name was Hine ahu one, the Earth-formed Maiden. She and Tane had a daughter which they named Hine titama, the Dawn Maid. Hine titama grew up into a beautiful woman. In due course she bore several daughters, who were also the daughters of Tane.

When Hine titama wanted to know who her father was, she asked Tane. His reply was to ask the posts of the house. This is how she learned the truth. Her husband was also her father. This filled her with so much shame, that she wanted to leave. The world she was in was the world of light. Now she wanted to go to the under-world, the world of darkness. Because there she could be with Papa, her grandmother.

She traveled to the entrance of the under-world where she was stopped by the guardian. His advice to her was to go back to the light and pleasure, because forward was the spirit world. But she refused, so creating the path of death for mankind. She became the goddess of the under-world: Hinenuitepō.
