This is the story of Hutu and
Pare, in short:
Hutu was a young good looking warrior skilled in the
art of spear and dart throwing. He was competing at a gathering where a
young woman of high rank fell in love with him She declared her love but
he could not accept as he already had a wife and children. Inexperienced
at accepting rejection she killed herself. Hutu was accused of having
killed her by the servants who had not cared for the princess properly.
He was sentenced to die, but at his request, was granted a reprieve of
three days.
He used these days to go in meditation by repeating a
very powerful prayer he had heard the priests use at the burial of a
high chief. His soul was able to leave his body and find the way to the
underworld, where he found the location of house where the soul of Pare
was in residence.
Now he thought of a plan to get them both out. He
introduced a game to the younger spirits by bending trees over with
ropes and letting them go, so catapulting them through space. Pare, who
came out of her exclusion to see what all the commotion was, was
overjoyed to find Hutu, and embraced him.
Hutu talked the others in giving them a ride spurring
them on to bend the tree back
even
further.
When they let go, they flew through space with such
force that they reached the ceiling of the underworld. The ceiling is
the earths crust which is penetrated by the roots of the trees of the
upper world. They grabbed hold of some roots and worked their way to the
surface.
Once there, their souls found their ways back to their
bodies. When it was found that Pare was not dead after all, her people
were overjoyed and Hutu was exonerated.
