| I was interested in exploring my roots and that of a New
Zealander in general, in order to forge something new from a common base. I was
born in Holland where Germanic tribes started to form a separate identity from
surrounding tribes 2000 years ago. The Celtic influence came as far as the South
border. In England the Teutonic influence (Saxons and Vikings) mingled more with
the Celtic influence. Celtic art, that has survived, is based on and inspired by
vegetative growth. It is mostly surface decoration on metal objects that have
survived. So I have been adapting these designs to wood carving. |
