This 5.5 metre paddling outrigger is taken from the same mould as the Ulua sailing canoe. It is an attempt to
make a single seat outrigger more versatile with the capacity to carry
supplies and camping equipment. It has a lower freeboard than
the Ulua however and is equipped with a foot pedal controlled
rudder and only has a single seat. The deck is strip composite
Canadian cedar and epoxy glass. The hull is female moulded with
biaxial fabrics and Derakane vinylester resin. Watertight
bulkheads close off most of the hull. The hull weighs 25.5 kg
(56lb), the ama weighs 2.7 kg (6 lb) and the kiatos weigh 2.7 kg (6 lb)
for a total of 30.9 kg (68lb). The hull is moulded with a
stronger and heavier laminate to be durable for surfing and long
distance cruising. The Ulua paddler is shorter than the minimum
length to race in officially santioned OC1 events. This shorter
length however adds manuerverability and ease of carrying on roof racks.
