AboutOcicats

The ocicat was the surprise result of a cross between the Siamese and the Abyssinian cat. The aim was for Aby-pointed Siamese, and the arrival of a spotted kitten was completely unexpected. The spotted kitten looked similar to the South American wild cat, the Ocelot, and so the Ocicat was named. The Ocicat has no wild blood, being originally a mix of Siamese, Abyssinian, and American Shorthair.

The Ocicat is a medium to large, well muscled cat; of moderate type; with a shorthaired, spotted coat. Ocicats are athletic, powerful and lithe. Like the Abyssinian, they are intelligent, people-orientated and affectionate. They are talkative, with cute husky voices. They love to play. Many will fetch toys and they can be trained to walk on a lead. Ocicats come in twelve different colours: Tawny, Chocolate, Blue, Cinnamon, Lavender and Fawn, plus their silver versions, e.g. Chocolate silver, Blue silver, etc. Ocicats sometimes produce kittens with the classic pattern, and in New Zealand these are known as Classicats. Very rarely a solid coloured or Ivory kitten may be produced.

Occassional matings of Ocicat to Abyssinian are still permitted to introduce new blood and widen the available genepool. These first generation Ocicat kittens have the Abyssinian ticked tabby coat, with the possible addition of spotted tummies and stripes on the legs and chest. They tend to grow larger than your average full Abyssinian and are a delightful mix of the two breeds.
